Re: Dead Soldiers on TV
I have read recently about videos shown on Al-Jazeera (and elsewhere) showing dead and captured American troops.
Rumsfeld has denounced these as a violation of the Geneva convention, which is rather ironic given the illegality of the US' invasion of Iraq.
I think more of these videos should be shown; I think it would be elucidating if all casualties on both sides were constantly aired on as many TV networks as possible. How long would Americans, British and Australians continue to consent to funding the invasion? How quick would they be to agree next time?
Not very, I'd guess.
War is ugly: people die; people are maimed; horrible things are done. Anything at all which can be done to show these atrocities to those people (i.e. us) who are funding the destruction is a Good Thing.
Also, how is showing these dead and captured American troops any different from showing the bombing of various Iraqi targets live on TV? (Not that this is an argument either way, but how can Rumsfeld denounce the one and praise the other?)
Does the US Administration have complaints about any of these pictures of prisoners being shown: Frontline, Amnesty International, Milli Gazette, BBC, Postcard?
