Daylight Savings Kills

November 01, 2008

Professors Paul Fischbeck and David Gerard have made a study of traffic fatalities that shows pedestrians walking during the evening rush hour are nearly three times more likely to be struck and killed by cars in the weeks after the fall time change.

Other studies on accident rates for drivers find that they are not more likely (in Finland) to have accidents, while a study from Vancouver concludes that drivers are 8% more likely to have an accident in the spring (when you lose an hour of sleep) and 8% less likely to have an accident in the fall (when you gain an hour sleep).

In any case, daylight savings is a silly waste of time. We should follow Saskatchewan and not honour it...
