OLD: government report on MK-ULTRA
People's eyes often glaze over if I mention MKULTRA, a widely-revealed CIA mind-control "experiment" which occurred throughout the 1950's and 1960's (and resulted in the development of LSD, subsequently re-discovered for recreational use by Albert Hoffman [``LSD, psilocybin, and the other hallucinogens do indeed, as Albert Hofmann asserts, constitute "cracks" in the edifice of materialistic rationality, cracks we would do well to explore and perhaps widen.'']).
This link is from a reference in the Wikipedia article on MKULTRA (``The scope of the project was outlined in a memo dated January 1952 that stated, "Can we get control of an individual to the point where he will do our bidding against his will and even against fundamental laws of nature, such as self preservation?"''). The results of this research were being used aboad by at least 1953 under a project code-named MKDELTA. Of course, nobody in the up to ~60 US spy agencies uses anything like this now, of course, for interrogations...(only on their own troops)...and certainly not in Gauntanamo, where ``U.S. military officials have deployed Behavioral Science Consultation Teams, or bscts, to help devise and implement interrogation strategies -- a melding of psychology and military intelligence. The psychologists and psychiatrists who work in these bscts apparently develop individually tailored psychological approaches aimed at creating rapport with -- or, if necessary, breaking the resistance of -- each detainee. The techniques they have employed, I was told, follow very closely the techniques studied and perfected by behavioral scientists working in a different capacity for the military since the Cold War [i.e. MKULTRA].''
