After reading some Calgary Herald editorials (which aren't online) at a coffee shop today, I wrote the following letter:

Despite the rationality of the suggestion to sell surplus Canadian beef to Canadians at ``fire sale'' prices, the Calgary Herald editors should know full well that their idea is illegal. Under trade agreements such as NAFTA -- which the Herald has editorially endorsed in the past -- charging less domestically for a commodity like beef or gas or oil is illegal (under Article 301, one may not discriminate in favour of domestic sources; since we import US beef, this would of course apply).

Naturally, this was pointed out by opponents of such trade agreements at the time.
